Avengers: Endgame - What You Definitely Need to Remember (Spoiler Free)

Image
Oh, how I cried. Never have I cried over a movie as much as I have here. Definitely an experience not just MCU fans, but people in general should have. I will not be reviewing Avengers: Endgame yet, as I will be seeing it again soon, and am still processing. Needless to say, my emotions are all in a jumble, I feel as though my heart had been pulled out of my chest and crushed before me, and my hands still hurt from all the clapping I did opening night. It goes without question that Infinity War is critical for this movie, but will repeat it just in case anyone is thinking of watching Endgame without having ever watched Infinity War. Trust me, you'll be thankful. Captain America: Civil War, because that rift between Iron Man and Cap is critical Next, rewatch, or at least keep in mind the first Avengers film, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy. They play a critical role. If you can't do all three, watch refresh yourself on the attack of New York in Avengers, ...

Captain Marvel - Off-Screen Brie Larson will Make You Question the Fate of the MCU

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia. As you might have guessed, I have some problems with Brie Larson. Captain Marvel was fine - no match though to Black Panther, or the likes of Iron Man, Doctor Strange, or Spider-Man Homecoming. It wasn't the worst solo movie, nor the best, resting in the safe middle where the majority of the solo films find themselves. Breaking records has to do more with the feminist side than the actual plot or acting, because while Captain Marvel should have by all means been epic, Brie Larson is too dry of an actress, no amount of superpowers saving her from appearing dull. Nick Fury and the birth of the Avengers are the real stars, as well as the hope for having Skrulls secretly hidden in the MCU all this time; have Loki turn out to be a Skrull, if it means we get Loki back! Basically, Captain Marvel also got her powers from the tesseract / space stone. Nick Fury names the Avengers after her. Project Pegasus links back to here. And Fury lost his eye to a cat;...

Ant-Man and the Wasp - The Quantum Realm We've Been Hearing About

Image
*Thanks Wikipedia. Coming after Infinity War, it is safe to say that Ant-Man and the Wasp under-performed, trying to elevate its box office with the constant reminder that it was the next MCU film after Infinity War. Really, it takes place simultaneously; imagine if Ant-Man and the Wasp had been released before Infinity War. Would the Infinity War hype have helped it? Would the dusting of Wasp and her parents have ruined Infinity War, or intrigued us more as to what was going to happen? Honestly, I think that, if not both, than at least Ant-Man and the Wasp would have pulled more money, fans left to wonder, just what happened . You only need the end credit clips of this movie for Endgame. Sorry Paul Rudd, but this isn't working. And I have fun with both Ant-Man movies - Paul Rudd and Michael Peña are great - but having just come off of Infinity War, this was a slight bump on the road. So, in just a little over a minute, what you must watch for Endgame: Yeah, so just rememb...

Avengers: Infinity War - Has it Actually Only Been a Year?

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia. The Greatest Cinematic Event of 2018. All the MCU, brought together. Yes, if you even had the slightest interest in the MCU, Avengers: Infinity was a must see for you last year. Obviously, this is your #1 rewatch movie for Endgame, the bare minimum for Thursday night. Any summary would not do justice to all the moving parts, plot lines being drawn in throughout the MCU, references made to the enjoyment of the MCU fandom. So no, I will not be summarizing here; go watch the movie. I'm planning to rewatch it again  the Thursday of before the movie. If for some reason you can not rewatch before Endgame, I'll refresh some key info for Endgame. First off, The original six - Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye (though not shown in Infinity War) - survive the dusting, as do Nebula, Okoye, Rocket, Captain Marvel and War Machine. We have been revealed that Pepper, Happy, Wong, Valkyrie, and Ant-Man outside of the film as well, all these...

Black Panther - Going Beyond the MCU Fandom

Image
*Image from Wikipedia. Black Panther is one of those films that I'd be surprised if someone hadn't seen. Yes, it is a solo superhero film, without bringing in any of our main Avengers, the only other MCU character we know prior to this besides Black Panther being Everett Ross, but that's what makes Black Panther all the more impressive. Finding itself months before Infinity War, Black Panther had it's first black superhero lead. While War Machine and Falcon came second to Iron Man and Captain America, and Nick Fury is the big boss of all, Black Panther is a full showcase on an African hero and taking place in the fictional Wakanda in Africa. Beyond continuing the MCU, Black Panther was important socially by putting Black Panther as equals to, if not the original six, than at least to the likes of Doctor Strange and Spider-Man in terms of power and importance level, but also over-passing so many superheroes in terms of box office and popularity. While Captain Marvel...

Thor: Ragnarok - AAAA-AH!!!

Image
*Thanks Wikipedia. AAAA-AH! AAAA-AH! Yes, it wasn't a lie, Thor: Ragnarok saved the Thor trilogy, a remake The God of Lightning desperately needed after Thor: The Dark World. It's a must watch for Infinity War, we find out where Hulk, Thor, and the rest of the Asgardians (plus a few others) end up and why it is that we see them all (mostly) dead on the Asgardian ship, at the feet of Thanos. More importantly. Banner talks of a fear of being unable to turn back to himself if he becomes Thor once more. During the ultimate (AAAA-AH!) fight, he changes to help save the Asgardians, and he is in his Hulk form when we last see him. Yet, after being taken down by Thanos and sent back to Earth, we have Bruce Banner once more. Even worse, the Hulk no longer comes out. Why? With all the rumors speculating on what happened to Hulk, including that Banner is actually Loki in disguise, I believe that because of the Hulk, Thor: Ragnarok will yet be heavily important for Endgame. And even ...

Spider-Man: Homecoming - Tony Stark Being a Dad

Image
*From Wikipedia. Even non-Marvel fans know Spider-Man. Even non-superhero fans know Spider-Man. Heck, I'd be surprised to come across someone who did now have any grain of knowledge about who Spider-Man was. As we all know, Spider-Man: Homecoming is the third version of this webbed hero to come out on the big screen, Tobey Maguire being the original Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield following with The Amazing Spider-Man, and now Tom Holland for this Sony-Marvel join-up. And, as the fandom and public in general have pointed out, Peter Parker and Aunt May keep getting younger every time. Beyond being the first time Spider-Man is actually in the MCU, it is also the most realistic in depicting a high-school boy superhero, both in the actors appearance and his life outside of the Spider suit. Starting with Parker's phone-filmed side of Civil War, Homecoming takes places post-Civil War, Captain America a war criminal and the Sokovia Accords being talked about in the background of on...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Let's Look into Star-Lord's Past

Image
*Image from Wikipedia. Obviously, any fan of the original Guardians of the Galaxy film will enjoy this film. It continues with it's comedic feel, music ever present, though the plot, in my opinion, does not match its predecessor. In terms of Endgame, we are first presented to Mantis here, plus Nebula ends with plans to go after Thanos - we know from Infinity War that she fails, though. The dynamic between Yondu and Rocket was, to me, one of the more interesting aspects of the film, making Yondu's death all the more touching when Rocket, first talking of Yondu, ends up referring to the batteries he himself stole. Plus, the Mary Poppins line is just so great. Gamora starts getting a bit annoying to me in the film, as does Drax, but the ending saves them both. The reason is Gamora's unnecessary coldness towards and Darx's lines sometimes move from funny to... not pleasant and not humorous. Star-Lord's is as he was in the first film, so enjoy him, because we all ...

Doctor Strange - Sherlock Follows Watson to the MCU

Image
*From Wikipedia doth this image come... I'm a big fan of BBC, specifically Doctor Who (New Who), Torchwood, and Sherlock, so I'm constantly on the lookout for those actors, especially Benedict Cumberbatch because his acting is just that good. Plus, Martin Freeman had just shown up in Captain America: Civil War, so I was hoping - and continue to hope - for an interaction between the two. Come on, Feige! Just have them on the screen at the same time, at least! Regardless of that, Doctor Strange is definetly one of MCU's best solo intro films - one of the best; let's not forget the greatness of Black Panther that beat them down. Still, I put Doctor Strange with Iron Man in the way it is quick to grab your attention. Smart guys having a fall from grace seems to work for MCU. Well, except for The Incredible Hulk. Stephen Strange is at Tony level smarts, fame, and fortune in his own field, the top surgeon full of arrogance who, in a car crash, has his hands damaged to t...

Captain America: Civil War - Or, Avengers 2.5

Image
*Image from Wikipedia. Before Infinity War, this was the pinnacle of the MCU. Sure, there were no Guardians present, but it was still the ultimate mash-up in that now only were our Avengers all together, but fighting one another. Yes, if you somehow never watched Civil War, it is a definite must-see, regardless of whether you are an MCU fan or not. So Team Cap versus Team Iron Man. A division among fans. I remember how at my school, even teachers were arguing over the better side. Yes, Cap has the morals, and we knew Bucky was up and about prior to this, Team Cap seeming to be the overpowerful side of the fandom on the online world. I, being Team Iron Man, understood the morality issues with Tony, but also remember, he is the foundation of this franchise, his film being the first released, along with being the smartest of them all. I went in a Team Iron Man, and left as one, even more in favor of my side. But others switched. Bucky is the center of our plot, being a suspected cri...

Wrapping Up Phase Two - Get Ready for War

Image
*Again, just Googled for this pic. So, now we have finished Phase 2. Holding both hits and misses, Phase 2's biggest contribution to the MCU is showing how the Avengers got from being a team to divided by Captain America: Civil War. Must rewatch is Captain America: The Winter Soldier, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron (Ultron mostly so you know why Hulk is AWOL for Civil War). Rewatch Ant-Man mostly for the character and the quantum realm. Iron Man 3 you should rewatch for the sake of the cast list, but beyond that, my guess is you should be fine for Endgame. If you have the time, watch Thor: The Dark World for the Reality Stone and Loki, but even then, if you at least know where the stone ends up (with The Collector), than you're fine. As of today, we are a mere week away from Endgame. It's both so close and so far. If you absolutely have no time for any rewatching, thank Youtubers for looking out for you. Get hyped! We're headi...

Ant-Man: This is the Closest We'll Get to a Latino Superhero

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia. Not as comedic as Guardians of the Galaxy, Michael Peña's Luis and his buddies carrying the bulk of this, with Paul Rudd's Scott Lang/Ant-Man having to me the more sensible of them them. Not as action filled as any of the MCU, though Hope Pym tries - and fails - to amaze us with her fighting and lack of feeling. Despite this, Ant-Man is fun to watch, but I will admit from the beginning, I'm not certain if you need him for Endgame. The only reason you should rewatch - or do your first watch - is that Ant-Man is back in Endgame and the importance of the Quantum Realm. Yes, these two aspects are a big deal, but if you know your Ant-Man pretty well and you don't have that much time, maybe skip, or look up a quick summary. Now, Paul Rudd does do well here, don't get me wrong. Basically, Ant-Man is the family film of the MCU, and the MCU is a bunch of family film movies, PG-13 rating or not. You believe in his love for his daughter, a ni...

Avengers: Age of Ultron - The Mind Stone Was There All Along

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia Jarvis got the ultimate upgrade. All right, Vision said he isn't technically either Jarvis or Ultron, but still, Vision has Jarvis's voice, so... Considered the weakest of the Avenger films, but honestly, when sorting such films, things are going to go last just because, Avengers: Age of Ultron does give us a better look at the world of the MCU. Even if you missed seeing Wakanda on the map in Iron Man 2, or the fact that Cap's vibranium shield is made from such vibranium that came from Wakanda, this movie definetly puts Wakanda on everyone's radar, regardless of whether you are an MCU fan or not. But let me return to the movie in general. No character is ever really weak here, except for Hawkeye. Sorry, but that scene with him and his wife talking was too long. Ha ha, a super long conversation just to point to the fact that Hawkeye didn't notice what's going on between Black Widow and Hulk, thanks for that too long scene. I d...

Guardians of the Galaxy - Who Are These Weirdos?

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia At this point in the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy seemed like an outlier; barely any interaction with Earth, the only connection to the Avengers they had was through Thor: The Dark World, and one is clearly a raccoon. How are these equal to the likes of Tony and Cap? And, after having seen this movie more than one time, yes, it does have its own style, music a big factor. While comedy was present previously in the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy is full-on comedy, the action coming second in what you remember from this film. Peter Quill/Star Lord will quickly win you over - though that will all be lost when because of him the gauntlet isn't taken from Thanos and half of everyone is dusted. Chris Pratt basically summons Andy Dwyer from Parks & Recreation in his goofiness, giving him some cool gadgets and space as his playground. Basically, if you liked Parks & Rec, you'll definitely enjoy GotG. Gamora is alright - basically, she takes on ...

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - The Return of Bucky

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia. I'll be honest; when I watched this movie for the first time, and Winter Soldier's mask finally came off, I didn't realize it was Bucky till Cap outright said it. Maybe it was because I didn't rewatch Captain America: The First Winter Soldier before watching this. Maybe the MCU relied too heavily on that we would keep the image of Cap's friend fresh in our minds; to be honest, they did show a photo of Bucky at the Smithsonian, but still, I wasn't expecting a return of Bucky, so he was the last thing on my mind during that fight. That being said, the movie blows away its predecessor. Cap is shown finding his footing in today's world, all while it is revealed that Hydra has actually infiltrated SHIELD all this time. Cap himself grows more likable here, though I dislike his need to comply in fighting without his shield. Sure, this shows that Cap is an actual fighter, able to hold up on his own, winning, but what if he hadn...

Thor: The Dark World - The Reality Stone's Hiding Spot

Image
*Taken from Wikipedia. I've heard people call this the worse MCU movie, excluding The Incredible Hulk. Someone even compared the Thor trilogy to the Cars movies, the sequels becoming the franchises's disappointments. I agree; Jane Foster is very unlikable, at least to me, throughout this whole movie, they seem to want to make a love triangle with Sif (and then she's gone from Ragnarok), and Darcy crosses the line from funny to annoying. But the problem lies mainly in Jane Foster. I get the wanted the whole empowered woman angle, but did she really have to talk to Odin like that. True, she had no idea who he was, but she is on another planet with magic/high level science, with something dangerous inside her, and Odin is this tough old man with an eyepatch, like and Asgardian Nick Fury. And she tries to be so dramatic when explaining how physics and reality will be in chaos, but it sounds so fake! Natalie Portman clearly didn't bother to giver her all in this film, ...

Iron Man 3 - The Christmas Marvel Movie

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia Let's begin Phase 2: I always forget that this is a "Christmas" movie till some random channels put it on around the season. But I don't have cable anymore, so I guess I'm going to forget till the next time I rewatch this film. Now, of course, this has nothing on the first Iron Man, or Avengers, but I do still think its important to watch a few times. This movie is one of my points for why I was Team iron Man over Team Cap; Tony Stark has PTSD, is suffering from anxiety. And understandably so, he almost died! He thought he was going die! Yet, I think Iron Man 3 suffers in that it wants to rely a bit too heavily on this point. I guess some parts are a must rewatch, considering the actors list, and I do like the idea of the Iron Man suits working without Tony in them; it's like Jarvis's training before becoming Vision, in a way, at least strategy-wise. But yeah, don't feel like you have to watch this for Endgame, unles...

Concluding Phase 1

Image
*I googled for this pic... The first phase. The first culmination of Marvel. By the conclusion, it was clear for all, if not sooner, that the MCU was a success. In conclusion of rewatching Phase 1, I only have a few small notes. In terms of Endgames, and the MCU in general, Avengers is a definite must, Iron Man and Captain America following behind, then Thor (for Loki!), Iron Man 2 penultimate, and The Incredible Hulk almost skippable, if not for hardcore fans. Of course, CGI animation is not where it is now, and you can more easily see the staging in the fight scenes than now. Now, for those of you who can't do an actual rewatch, I hope my other posts were good refreshers. If not, Youtubers have you covered: Now, onto Phase 2!

The Avengers - Let's Mash Them Up!

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia. "There once was an idea..." Yeah, the quote that has come back into central focus as Endgame approaches, first said by Nick Fury. We have the original trinity - Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor - included within our original six Avengers, the ones that survived the Thanos snap (plus a few others). With all the talk about time travel, leaked footage, theories, and so on, it is of course integral to refresh this movie in preparation for Endgame. Loki is the Big Bad for our Avengers here, all while being a pawn for Thanos in his greater plan. But let me focus on Loki first. As I stated before, I love Loki and Avengers furthers such enjoyment. Also, I'd like to point out how great it is that he changes his wardrobe, just to fit in with the scene. He could have easily continued with his suit and scarf, but went back to his Asgardian clothes. And Tom Hiddleston's acting is just great, not even having to speak to convey Loki's ways. ...

Captain America: The First Avenger - WW2 and Tony's Dad?

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia (Also coming a bit after my rewatch, but blame school, not me.) Despite being Team Iron Man, I do love and enjoy Captain America. Also, I'm a big history fan (thought I wanted to be an archaeologist or historian when younger), so a movie with superheroes and WW2 is definitely going to catch my attention. Now, I believe that, as with Thor, I saw this after Avengers, but since it takes place in the past, and we have that seen in Avengers that is also an end credit for Cap, with his reintegration, I believe that no harm was done. Steve Rogers plays well as a princess story, and not in a bad way. The guy (in place of the girl) is faced with wrong, challenging their goodness, which is so clear to see, making us question why is so good a person in such a society. And, salvation! In the form of this super soldier serum. Now he's great and pretty (or handsome, I guess; is there a right term?),but now to prove they are still good! And he does so. And a...

Thor - Or, the Introduction of LOKI (plus Hawkeye)

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia This is coming a few days after my watch but... not my fault (college!). So, I'm a big Loki fan. He and Iron Man are tied for my favorites out of the whole MCU, so yes, I was in utter shook in Avengers: Infinity War when he was outright killed (though I cling to my hopes that he is still alive). In fact, I didn't get the point of Thor, feeling like Loki was the better of the two - Chris Hemsworth was was able to steal it back from Tom Hiddleston in Thor: Ragnarok, though, making me worry about Thor when Infinity War came around But let's get back to the movie. Now, the first time I watched Thor was after the Avengers, my family and I wanting to find out just who was this guy, whose brother brought down destruction in New York. And it was an entertaining movie - not Iron Man level, but still, acceptable. Watching it now, in the MCU release date order, I wish I'd watched it before the Avengers, because of Loki in the first part of the mo...

Iron Man 2 - Introducing Black Widow, War Machine, and a Little of Thor

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia. Considering the very little attention given to The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 is for many the second MCU movie. It picks up right from where Iron Man left off. While the story line is no match as that of the first Iron Man, the movie does have its own merits. First off, we meet Black Widow, and while she is undercover. While her mini encounter in Stark's ring gave some indication of her fighting abilities, even her greatest fight scene in this film is no match to what Black Widow comes to pull off later on. While being a female superhero, she falls as a supporting character, rather sexualized in her clothing and appearance. Yet, this is for the "bad" of Tony's character to bounce off of, him, of course, ending up with Pepper Potts, despite his comments. Rhodey, obviously, has a big change, in that the actor is different. Still, I think Don Cheadle is the superior of the two, though it does hurt to have such big of a switch in the m...

The Incredible Hulk - Is it worth a rewatch?

Image
*Image taken from Wikipedia Is it worth a rewatch? I know for some, it isn't even worth a  watch, and I get it; Mark Ruffalo isn't Bruce Banner here, the Hulk looks completely different, and, despite coming after Iron Man, the story isn't that engaging. I remember an Instagram feed of Red Queen  author Victoria Aveyard in which she gave a short phrase about each Marvel movie, stating to skip The Incredible Hulk. *Credit to the great Victoria Aveyard for this screenshot. And I have to say, it wasn't that engaging. Watching as I ate lunch, I played on my phone afterwards as the movie progressed, even the action scenes failing to fully engage me. Learning Portuguese, I was slightly happy to know be able to understand what is being said in the beginning while in Brazil, without needing to look at the subtitles, but beyond that, there was no great rewatchability for this film. For those of you who haven't seen it, here's my advice: hardcore Marvelites, wat...

Rewatching Iron Man - A Return to the Beginning

Image
*(Image taken from Wikipedia) Back in 2008, the beginning of it all came in the form as Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. Now, back then, going to the movie theater was more on luxury side of things, and my family was originally very anti-TV, so I didn't see it at the movie theater on release day, but sometime after. And I remember playing by the sofa as my parents put on Iron Man, being told to cover my eyes during that mini bed scene (it took my years to stop covering eyes during this intense kissing), amazed at Tony Stark's escape, and surprised that this seemingly nice old man was a bad guy. My brother, a few years old at the time we first watched this movie (we're about 7 years apart), would grow up on Iron Man. My mom was and is a fan of Robert Downey Jr., my dad and uncle being big fans of action movies. While over protective in general, including movie exposure, my dad wanted to see Iron Man, so I'd have to suck it up. And I'm very anti-vio...

In Preparation for Avengers: Endgame

Image
*(Picture taken from Disney Movie Rewards) About a year ago, I'd planned to rewatch the MCU, in order of release dates, so as to prepare for the cinematic event, Avengers: Infinity War. But... that didn't happen. Having started college that same year, and dealing with social anxiety, stress, and home sickness, if I wanted to go Thursday opening night, I'd have to get homework done ahead of time, something that I'd kept postponing. So, alas, no rewatch, but I've seen all the MCU movies so often that I had no problems. This year, I decided to try again. Originally planning to start in January, so as to possibly also watch Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, and the Netflix Marvel series. But that didn't happen. I wanted to start the rewatch in March, on my birthday, but my love of musicals won out, I ending up watching  Hairspray, The Sound of Music, The Greatest Showman, and a bootleg of Dear Evan Hansen (sorry Pasek and Paul). Having bought my Avengers: Endgam...
